Approaches to Archetypes was a series of workshops exploring two distinct but complementary perspectives on archetypes—those of Carl Jung and Michael Chekhov. Led by Jungian coach Max Chegwyn and theatre director Sinéad Rushe, this workshop was designed for directors, writers, theatre makers, actors, and artists interested in the psychological and physical aspects of character creation.
On Saturday, Sinéad Rushe explored Michael Chekhov’s psycho-physical technique, using Archetypal Gestures such as Expand/Contract and Push/Pull. These techniques help performers connect with universal themes, embody character through movement, and develop a richer physical vocabulary.
Over two Sundays online, Max Chegwyn focussed on Jungian Archetypes, offering an approach to authentic self-knowledge through engagement with unconscious and archetypal material. Participants learned how Jung’s theories can enhance creative expression and deepen their relationship with their psychological landscape through depth psychology and active imagination techniques.
This workshop was organised by Living Pictures, as part of the Associate Artists Programme.
