The Whole Routine
The Whole Routine is a musical performance about control and longing by Edward Thomasson, created in collaboration with songwriter Robbie Ellen and composer Charlotte Harding, and performers Adrian Quinton, Andrew Kerton, Clara Andersson, Penelope Granycome, Simon Tipping, and Yasmine Holness-Dove. The piece returns to London Performance Studios where it premiered in April 2025. This presentation of the work is part of a UK wide tour throughout 2026.
Developed over three years through weekend workshops and public presentations, this ambitious work uses song and dance sequences to explore how patterns of behaviour develop to manage difficult social feelings. The ensemble brings a range of experiences to the work: some have formal training; others sing in community choirs or perform in more informal settings. Each performer finds their own distinct way through the sequences. As harmonies falter, gestures fall flat, and routines slip out of time, The Whole Routine describes attempts at breaking the numb repetitions of conventional interaction and the sometimes-alarming awkwardness of trying to feel things differently.

Edward Thomasson makes performances, plays, videos, and paintings about social and sexual interaction. His work uses song, dance and enactment to describe the ways people try and fail to encounter each other. He writes texts and lyrics which are brought to life through collaborations with composers, performers, musicians and friends. In London he works closely with a regular ensemble of performers, while elsewhere he brings together groups of strangers in more temporary collaborations.
Thomasson has presented plays and performances in church halls, community centres & art spaces including Tate Britain, Glass House Community Centre and Studio Voltaire in London, KW Institute of Contemporary Art, KW Institute of Contemporary Art and Bonner Kunstverein in Germany, and West Space Melbourne in Australia, amongst others. Thomasson also collaborated with Lucy Beech on performance projects between 2007 and 2017. Together they have exhibited in theatre and exhibition spaces including Tate Britain (2017), Maureen Paley, London (2016), and the Barbican Theatre (2011).
Scores launch
