TRASHHHEAP: Using Trash for Performance is a workshop led by Jean and Cabbage the Clown, two alt-drag performers who see trash as treasure.
As drag things (rather than queens or kings), Jean and Cabbage resist commercial and conventional restraints of gender and drag. They explore the worlds of discarded objects and rejected things, animating and embodying mundane items to create fantastical, ridiculous stories and characters.
Across two workshop sessions participants will be supported through the development of a new or existing drag, cabaret or live performance act, using found materials to inspire and create looks, characters, props, and stories.
The first session, on Wed 15 July, will focus on developing a new act in response to a found object. The second session, on Thu 16 July, will involve creating a new physical costume or prop, to bring an act to life. It is possible to attend either or both of the workshop sessions.
The sessions are aimed at practitioners interested in drag, cabaret and alternative comedy and performance modes, who wish to refine their visual identity and to make their practice more sustainable. However, participants from all backgrounds and practices are welcome, and no previous experience is expected or required.

Access
The workshops takes place in Studio 5, which is located on the ground floor with step-free access and has an accessible toilet. All toilets are gender-neutral.
About
Jean is a shape-shifting, gender-bending drag alien from a planet made of trash. They have performed across theatre and nightlife spaces in the UK and USA, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Theatre, EartH Hackney, Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, Clapham Grand, Slipper Room (NYC) and The Divine. They won Top of the Slops S4 and were a finalist of Man Up! (2024). When not in drag, Jean (Sophia Hirsch by day), works as a freelance performance tutor and director on the BA and MA performance courses at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Peckham.
Cabbage the Clown is a drag vegetable. A lettuce but sadder. Winner of your heart (2025), Not another drag competition (2023), and Top of the Slops (2022), they have performed at venues across the UK, including the National Theatre, the Pleasance Dome, Soho Theatre, Leicester Square for Pride, Cardiff Millennium Centre, The British Library, and internationally in Frankfurt. Their debut solo show, Cinemadrome, was named in the British Comedy Guide’s list of Best 50 Reviewed Shows of Edinburgh Fringe, 2025.
Horizontal Practices is a strand of LPS programming dedicated to promoting peer-to-peer learning and non-hierarchical spaces for conversation. These take form as discursive events, professional training and curated guest workshops.
Horizontal Practices responds to the need for and importance of space for experimental modes of exchange that sit outside the context of institutional ‘education’ frameworks. As with the rest of the LPS programme, queer and feminist practices and those which sit in-between visual art and theatre are at the core of Horizontal Practices.
